It's Time!
« on: June 21, 2007, 12:19:36 PM »
After getting back from Maupin, I've decided I have let the '55 sit too long, so today I started running the valves on my GB/Autocraft 2007cc with 42 Webers. No wonder it was missing, it had one broken valve adjuster. It was cracked about halfway through, someone must have overtightened it. Plus the valves were WAY too tight, maybe causing some overlap?? Once I can get my '55 pan from my brother's house,(Victorville, Ca) I'll start to prep the pan for brakes and coating. Phil must have been partly to blame for the motivation after seeing all his posts for the brakework on the notch he's been doing.

So what's going on with Autocraft? I have tried repeatedly to get some valve adjusters and can't seem to get an answer.

You can get replacement valve adjusters from CB and The Bergs. They are5/16-24.  I've got a few new Scat ones laying around but I have no idea where they are.

Ended up finally getting Autocraft valve adjusters, a few for spares. Still seems to fall on it's face at revs. Won't rev over about 4500. I'm thinking some gummed up Webers. It also has the old "tried and true" .009 (ugh!) I read on a thread on the Samba about the .010 having a better rpm curve. Any Weber experienced dubbers with suggestions?

Try doing a leak down check. You may have a burnt or warped valve from running them tight. The valves have to sit on the seat squarely to cool. If they don't have a chance to cool they warp or burn and really don't seat and you loose compression.

In my honest opinion, there is nothing wrong with a good 009 distributor on the right engine. Guys have run them for 30+ years and never had a problem until that a$$hole John Conolly from aircooled.net opened his mouth and now everybody thinks they are the worst distributor ever made. Sure there are better ones out there (like the 010) but if you've got a German 009 it will work. I always laugh when I see someone say "it's because you're running a 009". Look at the top 20 and even the members cars list on the Cal-look forum and I bet 50% are running a 009. I'm running a crappy 009 copy with a Pertronix and MSD 6AL my car sees 5000 everyday and it's only a stocker with dual Solexes for now. I do have an 010 that I have rebuilt for my new 2165cc IDA engine.

I have run many .009's without any troubles either, I'm first looking at the carbs. I have a few .010's which I will change over to AFTER I can resolve the carb issues. When I first bought the car, (over 5 years ago) it had turpintine smelling gas back then, and who knows how long it sat with that in it. The engine was originally built in '91 and has probably less than 1000 miles on it. I just haven't had the time to pull off the top plates yet.
